Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
Better than nothing is the first solo exhibition of mosaic works by Anglo-Irish artist Ruaidhri Ryan (Leicester, 1988). He is the first artist selected as part of Particelle, Marte’s art residency project.
Ruaidhri lives and works in London and is a multidisciplinary artist. His practice ranges from mosaic to film-making, investigating contemporary visual culture and focusing on the dissonance between expectations and reality.
Better than nothing takes its title from a lecture Ruaidhri gave at the London School of Mosaic. The exhibition reflects the artist’s research and poetic vision, which borrows the language of cinema to reflect on themes such as stillness, consumption, and the contemporary condition. The artist’s works capture the viewer’s attention through objects suspended in time, devoid of context, inviting a contemplative state that recalls the atmospheres of Luigi Ghirri and Domenico Gnoli.
